Daenerys stands in the Plaza of Pride in Astapor. The slavemaster Kraznys mo Nakloz is showing off his Unsullied. Daenerys is pretending she cannot speak Valyrian, so a ten-year-old slave girl from Naath1 is translating his words into the Common Tongue of Westeros. Arstan is with her as well, though he was against coming. Kraznys explains the training and discipline of the Unsullied, and Daenerys says she will consider his offer. She returns to Balerion with Aggo and Jhogo guarding her. On the way back, Arstan voices his strong disapproval of using Unsullied. Belwas is eating at the base of the ship when they arrive, and Ser Jorah waits for her on deck. Daenerys, furious that she must buy a slave army when she thinks their upbringing is horrible, slaps the knight, causing all eyes, including those of Groleo and Jhiqui, to focus on her. She goes below decks, where Irri is looking after Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion. Irri tells her that the dragons have been restless and do not like being caged; Drogon even bit her. Daenerys apologizes and sends her away to be alone. Ser Jorah comes after awhile. He tells her that while Unsullied may live harsh lives, they will not sack cities or rape women or kill babies when they have conquered. Daenerys wants to be honorable like Rhaegar, but Jorah points out that Rhaegar lived honorably and also died honorably, losing his kingdom.

GROUPS

Ghiscari - The people of Slaver's Bay. They were conquered by Valyria five thousand years ago. The symbol of the Ghiscari Empire was a harpy. Today the Ghiscari language is mostly forgotten, and they speak a dialect of High Valyrian.

Unsullied - Unsullied begin their training at five years old. They train from dawn to dusk until they master shortsword, shield, and spear; only one in three survive this harsh training. They are not necessarily the strongest fighters in the world, but their iron discipline is unmatched. They follow any order without question, and are fearless because they drink a mixture from the day they are cut that eventually causes them to feel no pain. When they are cut, not just the testicles are removed, but the penis as well. They are immune to temptaion. They are not allowed to own anything but their weapons and are not interested in plunder. They are not even allowed names so that they do not gain a sense of identity. Each day, they draw a random name out of a hat that is theirs for the day. The names are always types of vermin to remind them of their place. To make them hard and cruel, they must strangle a puppy they are given when they are cut a year later and must go to the slave marts and kill a newborn in front of her mother to win the spiked cap. They pay the slave owner a silver mark because they are forbidden to steal.
